LANforge-ICEcap Installation

The LANforge-ICEcap application is used to probe networks and create an XML file that can be replayed by LANforge-ICE. The ICEcap feature includes a modified version of the hping2 tool and a TCL/TK GUI application. The GUI is not required but it will make using the hping2 tool easier, especially for users not accustomed to command line tools like hping2.

  1. Choosing a Machine

The ICEcap toolset requires very little computing resources. The suggested minimum client platform specification is:

    • Pentium 300 Mhz
    • 128 MB RAM
    • 80MB Free Disk Space
    • Monitor/Video Card capable of 1024 x 960 resolution or higher.
  2. Installing on Linux

The LANforge-ICEcap tools should work on any modern Linux distribution. ICEcap requires root privileges to run so it must be run by the root user.

    1. Log in as user root:
      1. su - root
    2. Choose a directory in which to install the LANforge-ICEcap. We suggest /usr/local/bin
    3. Install LANforge-ICEcap.
      1. Download and un-zip the LANforge-ICECap_Linux.tar.gz. To unzip, use a command similar to:
        tar -xvzf LANforge-ICECap_Linux.tar.gz
      2. Optional: Use the SUID option to make hping2 and icecap2 available to non-root users:
        chmod a+s hping2
        chmod a+s icecap
    4. Start the LANforge-ICEcap tool with the command below. You must be the root user or have done the SUID step above.
      1. ./icecap

The LANforge-ICEcap GUI should pop up shortly after this if everything worked correctly! You can also use the hping2 tool directly from the command line.

  3. Installing on Windows

Run LANforge-ICEcap installer and follow the steps presented to you.

  4. Trouble-shooting guide

When I run 'icecap' I get an error: command not found
Make sure your $PATH includes the directory where you installed the hping2 and icecap tools. Also make sure that the icecap and hping2 tools are set to executable with the chmod tool.
